So it looks like it’s finally happening! Zack moved up his MoS group watch on Vero to Wednesday, May 20th (tomorrow at this writing). And within the industry we’re seeing bloggers that cover the film industry confirming that we should indeed expect Zack to announce ZSJL’s release on HBO Max (which launches May 27th) at the end to the group watch when he does his Q&A.
Of course a big question remains as to what type of deal Zack was able to put together! Grace Randolph hinted the other day that we might get a TV miniseries version of the 3:34 director’s cut of film (plus any new additional pickup footage) on HBO Max. HBO Max should have a premiere, highly anticipated original miniseries to rival Disney Plus’s The Mandolorian. Which has caused some consternation in those that want the film version. Including me. But please see my previous post on this blog, as I have made peace with it assuming that Zack actually has planned it this way.
Anyway, my guess:
It does make the most business sense for HBO Max that ZSJL be released first as a miniseries, yes. Zack may even have smartly pitched it that way to help HBO Max out right now during the pandemic. I can easily imagine him editing the footage from the rough cut together for a miniseries. I.e., with that very intention, as a unique version of the story. But I would think that after that, ZSJL will also be made available in the original film version as well. And eventually on disk two versions will be available, i.e., both as the miniseries and the film.
It’s a slight bummer that some of us have to work tomorrow (I do 😦 ) and will miss out on the real time announcement. Such is life. But as before with the BvS group watch, Vero will make the video available for rewatch. And that will be posted to YT as well, no doubt.
