BvS UE is a cinematographic masterwork.
Edit: Since publishing this years ago I have since come across this excellent analysis video of the technical aspects of Snyder’s signature visual style. Fascinating to see a knowledgeable breakdown of some of the ley techniques that Snyder uses:
The first point of my thesis that BvS:UE is a cinematophraphic masterwork is something that hopefully the reader can accept as more or less self-evident. From a debating perspective it is the weakest of my four arguments. I’m not an expert on cinematography or graphic art composition in general. I can’t offer any art theory behind why a particular composition looks good.
But like most people I can identify when an artwork is extraordinarily beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to me. It may be a matter of degree and personal taste just how visually satisfying BvS is. But I’m confident that most people that are familiar with the film will agree that it is beautifully shot.
BvS is one of the most gorgeous looking films that I can ever recall seeing. It really is as visually and atmospherically stunning to me as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner. (To some that will sound like hyperbole, but I sincerely mean it.)
If it doesn’t impact you the same way there’s nothing I can do about that. I wish it did! But as a member of an online community of fans of the film, I know I am far from alone in my appreciation for the cinematography of BvS.
Zack Snyder studied first as a painter. He went to school in England for a year after high school to study painting before he settled instead on pursuing a career as a filmmaker (source). Snyder does seem to have a particularly ‘painterly’ sensibility in terms of framing his scenes and shots.
About all I feel I can do here is pay homage by compiling some of my favorite shots to demonstrate just how visually stunning the movie is.
