The Seven Samurai was an important inspiration for Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Remember back in September, 2017 how Zack shared that his Justice League film drew inspiration from Kurosawa’s epic masterpiece The Seven Samurai? And if I recall correctly Zack also said that he felt ZSJL had a LotR-ish vibe as well. So perhaps we can think of it as inspired by a melding of those two film experiences.

But in any case, Zack has said that he worked on the film at home in black and white. And of course The Seven Samurai is in black and white. During Fandome Zack mentioned that he chafed at seeing some “brightly colored marketing” for his film after he left post production that pushed him even more to work on it in black and white at home.

So I’m very curious indeed to see what the film looks like in black and white. Zack is a brilliant colorist, and I’m sure I’ll be thrilled with the look of the film in color. But if the film has an elegiac tone to it, I’m thinking the black and white is going to deliver some of those emotional themes even more powerfully.

Well, anyway, we’ll get a taste today when Zack releases the full Hallelujah trailer in black and white, along with his live breakdown of the scenes he features. I assume Zack will host that watch party some time today on his Vero True Social account.
