Plans to get caught up here

I’ve been so busy irl, I’ve kind of let things sit for a while here. I noticed a big spike in views on July 5th which is encouraging. Curious what drove it! I’m a little surprised at no comments as yet. Best I can see I’ve got permissions for viewers to go ahead and post comments without requiring approval.

I’m still working on my analysis of Watchmen UC in which I will identify Jungian symbolism that I see.

The ZSJL page is hopelessly out of date by now. I don’t have time to try to keep up with each new development and story as it emerges. This isn’t a “news” site to begin with. But I’ll try to condense some of the most important info to get it more or less up to date.

Will Zack Snyder’s Justice League usher a magnetic pole shift for the entertainment industry?

We’ve recently witnessed an unusual confluence of remarkable events with May 20th’s historic announcement that Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be released on HBO Max.

First, a fan based social media movement came together to essentially “levitate the Pentagon.” Although unlike the symbolic anti-war protest event in 1967, our contemporary RTSC movement literally achieved what seemed to so many doubters and skeptics an utterly impossible task.

Second, a sea change is underway with the how the television and film entertainment is delivered, shifting from cable TV to the so-called “streaming wars” (similar to cable TV replacing broadcast antenna TV, etc.). One of the big players on that streaming war stage is a late arrival: HBO Max. And as mentioned HBO Max is now shrewdly playing an ace-in-the-hole of giving fans a rebirth of the original Snyderverse vision.

And third, the entire world has been shut down by a global pandemic. Covid-19 has halted film and television production and will likely continue to hurt the movie theater industry for a good while to come. Many theater-goers will be wary of entering a movie theater for some time. Presumably masks and distancing will be required. Concession stands will make no money because no one can eat or drink while wearing a mask! Fears of a resurgence of the disease in autumn, and concerns over just how bad that will be, will continue to harm the industry.

Anyway, it probably will be a long time before the movie theater industry returns to it’s former vigor.

(Personally I believe it will survive. But not until Covid-19 and/or it’s potential mutation(s) are really and truly gone. Either by virtue of naturally running it’s course or due to a vaccine. Nota bene: for some diseases we remain unable to come up with a vaccine, e.g., Malaria, Ebola, Dengue, HIV/AIDS.)

This combination of events makes me wonder if something akin to a ‘magnetic pole shift’ has begun with plans for ZSJL to release on HBO Max. Here is the rationale:

It sounds like there are plans for Zack Snyder to edit the film footage into a six episode TV miniseries for HBO Max. As Grace Randolph put it, “something that could be their Mandolorian.” Original TV series that keep fans hooked between episodes is the very core of success for Netflix and other streaming services. So for the sake of argument, let’s presume this does indeed happen. After the series has had enough time to attract new subscribers, it would then make sense for the film to release as a roughly four hour movie. Available of course exclusively via HBO Max subscription.

After that, ZSJL will become available then for digital purchase. Then it will release on disk as well. And finally it will make it’s way eventually to rental on other streaming services, and to TV markets that run with commercials, etc.

Once ZSJL has had both it’s TV miniseries run and digital release as a film via HBO Max, some semblance of normalcy may have returned to the theater industry…

Why not then give the film a (relatively) traditional theater release? According to traditional thinking, no one is going to pay to watch a movie in a theater after so many other ways of viewing it have been made available. But the entire world of entertainment media–or specifically it’s delivery system–will probably be in a process of re-configuring then. We don’t really know what that will look like yet. Release of any movie may very well be, by definition, ‘limited’ for all films. However I do have faith that movie theaters will remain in existence. I think a market will remain for film fans that love to watch movies on the big screen. Movie goers will still want to enjoying the experience communally with other fans, munching away on movie theater popcorn. More than likely theater movie-goers will pay a monthly membership subscription of at least $20. That was just being rolled out prior to the pandemic, actually. So it will be a luxury, for sure. But there may be enough devoted theater fans with sufficient income to make it work.

In any case, moving forward… perhaps at least for a good number of years, anyway… for all the reasons enumerated above, the theater business simply may not be quite as robust as in the past. And as such, theater release of movies might assume a place at the end of the film distribution cycle, rather than the beginning.

And that is what I mean by a “magnetic pole shift.”

Zack Snyder announces “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” will be released on HBO Max in 2021

It’s official. ZSJL will release some time in 2021 because Zack has more shooting to do. The same cast will return for the additional filming. The film will be four hours in length and may be released as well in a six episode TV miniseries on HBO Max.

Notably, Henry Cavill joined for the group watch, quashing rumors that he is no longer interested in playing the role or working with Zack Snyder.

Expectations are high that Zack will announce release of ZSJL on tomorrow’s Vero group watch of MoS

So it looks like it’s finally happening! Zack moved up his MoS group watch on Vero to Wednesday, May 20th (tomorrow at this writing). And within the industry we’re seeing bloggers that cover the film industry confirming that we should indeed expect Zack to announce ZSJL’s release on HBO Max (which launches May 27th) at the end to the group watch when he does his Q&A.

Of course a big question remains as to what type of deal Zack was able to put together! Grace Randolph hinted the other day that we might get a TV miniseries version of the 3:34 director’s cut of film (plus any new additional pickup footage) on HBO Max. HBO Max should have a premiere, highly anticipated original miniseries to rival Disney Plus’s The Mandolorian. Which has caused some consternation in those that want the film version. Including me. But please see my previous post on this blog, as I have made peace with it assuming that Zack actually has planned it this way.

Anyway, my guess:

It does make the most business sense for HBO Max that ZSJL be released first as a miniseries, yes. Zack may even have smartly pitched it that way to help HBO Max out right now during the pandemic. I can easily imagine him editing the footage from the rough cut together for a miniseries. I.e., with that very intention, as a unique version of the story. But I would think that after that, ZSJL will also be made available in the original film version as well. And eventually on disk two versions will be available, i.e., both as the miniseries and the film.

It’s a slight bummer that some of us have to work tomorrow (I do 😦 ) and will miss out on the real time announcement. Such is life. But as before with the BvS group watch, Vero will make the video available for rewatch. And that will be posted to YT as well, no doubt.

Anyway, sounds like we can get the champagne ready y’all. 😀

If Zack does what Francis Ford Coppola did with 1977’s The Godfather Saga and it’s Zack’s idea I can live with it.

I’m still not crazy about ZSJL being broken into an HBO Max miniseries. For me to accept it, it absolutely would have to truly be Zack’s idea, and I still want the movie released on disk as a film. But that said, I have to admit that in 1977 I was utterly mesmerized by what Francis Ford Coppola did with his The Godfather Saga 4 episode miniseries which added footage from his rough cut. It’s actually my preferred way of watching the two films together. So after getting over the initial shock of this miniseries possibility for release of ZSJL, by remembering this I’m in a little bit better place about it psychologically, should that indeed be what comes to pass.

Addendum:

Actually, after skimming the Wikipedia article it was probably the shorter version that combined the two films that aired in 1981 that I watched. But anyway, I thought it was sensational, I really loved it.

Grace Randolph hints that ZSJL may be split up into a HBO Max TV series a la The Mandolorian

Zack Snyder’s Justice League was shot as a film. If what Grace implies does indeed come to pass, I’m going to assume that it was the only way Zack was able to get his film released. After everything he’s been through with this movie, if they do this I really don’t think I’m on board with it re: subscription to HBO Max. It would obviously depend on what Zack says about it. But honestly, I’m still disliking it on general principles even if it’s what Zack says he wants to do.
